Liheap stands for “Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.” It is a useful program for those needing help with their utility bills. LIHEAP is offered mostly in the winter months, but is also sometimes available in the summer for cooling-although it depends on the funding for the season. Continue reading to find out how you can sign up for Illinois Liheap.

Step1

Contact your local community action agency or Department of Human Services for more information about where to apply for
home energy assistance in Illinois. Find out where you need to call to make an appointment for LIHEAP. Most offices often are labeled an Outreach office.

Step2

Arrive to your appointment on time or even a few minutes early when you apply for home energymag-glass_10x10.gif assistance. These appointments often fill up fast, and it is important you arrive on schedule. If you are late-you may have to reschedule your appointment for another time. Most of these rules will be the same in other states, and do not just apply to Illinois offices.

Step3

Gather all of your necessary documentation together once you arrive to your appointment for home energy assistance. The caseworker will want to see and copy the documents that you brought for home energy assistance. Most states will ask for similar documentation just like the ones in Illinois ask for.

Step4

Sign the Illinois Liheap application for home energy assistance once it has been printed. Look over it to be sure all of the information has been entered correctly. Ask any questions that you may have about the program. The caseworker should explain to you how the program will work.

Step5

Wait 30-45 days for an approval or denial letter to see if you qualify for home energy assistance in Illinois. You should continue to pay your utility bill until you have been approved and a credit has been added to your utility account. If you were denied, you can reapply again as long as there is still funding available.
