Cold soreshave no connection with cold with the only commonality being high temperature. The culprit being the herpes simplex virus that remains in a quiescent state in the nerve roots of those children who get infected by direct contact.

The affected areas are usually around the nose, lips, cheeks or chin which in many cases is passed through adults who kiss them.

If the body gets heated up due to reasons like cold or viral infection, sunlight, the heat activates the otherwise dormant virus which leads to symptoms like itching, tenderness, soreness in skin which aggravates to a swelling and later on into blisters in a duration period of 24-36 hours. The blisters take 10-14 days to clear up with alternating weeping and scabbing.

Herbs like Echinacea, wild indigo, St John’s wort, Melissa help clear inflammation while alternative herbs like burdock, calendula, peppermint, nettles, cleavers, red clover, and dandelion root help speed the elimination of toxins from the body.

Liquorices has been proved to be very effective against the herpes virus. One can mix about 10 drops each of the oils of turmeric, rosemary, lemongrass, rosewater with liquorices paste or blend 10 drops each of tea tree oil, true melissa, lavender, rosewater with liquorices cream and apply topically on the affected area in a duration of two hours till the symptoms subside.

Many vouch for the use of vitamin E oil, alcohol or ice compress help reduce the pain and speed the recovery process. One can use the local application of lemon balm, herbs like goldseal, chapparel and lomatium help ward off the infection.

A primeval topical treatment involves the use of a blend of aloe vera, turmeric, neem, pomegranate with some petroleum jelly to give speedy recovery. Centella asiatica in alcohol extract has been proved to cure the malady.

Lysine found in bean sprouts, fresh citrus fruits, veggies, dairy products, brewer’s yeast when included in the child’s diet will inhibit the infection by preventing its multiplicity. Vitamin B found in foods like eggs, yoghurt and meat promote healthy nerve functioning and help reducing the extent and frequency of attacks.  Arginine can help trigger the infection, so foods like peanuts, nuts, potatoes, oats, soya beans, lentils, peas, gelatine, seeds, sweet corn must be largely avoided in children prone to the infection.
