You don’t have to be an outgoing person or a sociable person for the purpose. You need not learn too much about your colleagues. Many people exhausted themselves by overdoing so many things and want to do it overnight and are unsuccessful. All you need do these simple things over time and your patience and commitment will pay off.
What you need to do is to get to know people at all levels of the organization, their titles and what they do. Become familiar with all the people you work with, whose work relates to yours. Knowing people and working with them will build confidence and trust. You will create suspicion if you do thing out of your head.
Take the initiative to bring people together to solve problems. You don’t have to have all the answers; you just need to know where to go to get the answers. For instance, volunteer to make tea or coffee of them, they will come as in the coffee room to drink because you already made tea for all of them. You will a group drinking tea or coffee at the same time. This is your chance to get to know them and befriend them.
Drop by and say hi to people even when you don’t need anything from them. Creating friendship and cordial work relationship is not only beneficial for your recognition by bosses, but also a nutrient for work place personal and professional development.
Volunteer to sit on committees, task forces, and communities of practice groups. Work conferences, social functions, etc where you play a role visible to top decision-makers or where you come into contact with decision-makers. Introduce your contacts to others. Become known as the person who knows everyone. If you practice these simple but effective procedures, it will definitely improve your visibility in the workplace and soon you will be very popular in your office.
Popularity is not for you to be bossy, but to be useful and an asset to the company or orgnaization you work for. You become a reliable person to the organzation. Once you achieved that promotion to higher management position will be not far from where you are.
