Though terms like ‘mythicism’ and ‘mythicist’ have been around for a few centuries, these may seem new to most people. First coined in German and English, the term mythicist was for people who doubted the historical accuracy of the Judeo-Christain Bible. Today the term is used for scholars and researchers who are investigating the authenticity of the New Testament Jesus Christ, trying to figure if He was real or just a myth like Mithra or Hercules. The mythicist could also question the veracity of other Biblical characters like Adam, Satan, Abraham, Eve, Noah, Moses, Solomon and David among others. During studies of other ancient cultures and their religion and mythology, there is good reason to doubt if these historical figures even existed since there is no scientific historical or archaelogical proof that they existed. The only proof of the existence of these historical persons is the Bible.

Most people may not even be aware of the volumnious studies that are involved in mythicism. The questioning of the Bible as per mythicism actually goes back a few centuries. The major work has been carried out in Europe towards the end of the 18th century, mainly in Germany and France.

By the end of the 18th century, there was the multi volume works of professor Charles Dupuis in France. He had a lot of evidence to prove that most ancient gods and godesses were of a solar nature and that characters from the Bible like Jesus had many aspects that were similar. The next was Count Volney and both of them taught the then Emperor Napolean Bonaparte and he hinself had once questioned whether Jesus really existed.

By the 19th century, these studies in mythicism were followed by Dr. F.C.Baur of Germany, the Tübingen School and his pupil Dr. David F. Strauss. He infact was attacked and lost his job for penning ‘Life of Jesus’ where he stated that the existence of Jesus was mythicism. He defined mythicism for quite some time before Dr. Bruno Bauer wrote about the Bible as ‘history’. There have been several mythicists since like Rev. Dr. Robert Taylor who was jailed twice in England in the 1820 and 30s on account of charges of blasphemy. He lectured about Jesus being a myth. Mythicism is till around and a number of mythicists, researchers and writers of the 29th century continue their work.

Mythicism offers a lot to those who find it difficult to believe in the gospel story of the Bible as history but like to know the deeper meaning. The major work of mythicism is to acknowledge ancient nature worship and astrotheology where cultures contributed to the formation of Christianity. Astrotheology is actually personification and worshipping of the moon, planets, constellations, sun, earth and stars as well as other phenomena like eclipses and various celestial bodies. The study of astrotheology, archaeastronomy and mythicism have revealed ancient knowledge that is overlooked in today’s world and is yet rather fascinating.
