The 54 Bel Air versions had beautiful and tasteful bold components especially its arched windshield, the hooded head lumps, the rear wheel bumper skirting and the conspicuous tail arms. The Bel Air was wonderful case in point of fashionable custom in the Detroit area in the 1950’s whereby an old car was made without altering its elemental design. General Motors were good at this and the evidence of that was in the 54 Chevrolet Bel Air.
One of the highlights of the 1954 Bel Air series was the broad chrome strip of molding running from the rear fender bulge to the rear bumper with the inside strip being painted with a coordinating color with the outside body color. Chrome was very prominent on this vehicle. The Bel Air interiors had a very wide use of chrome across the lower part of the dashboard together with steering wheel full of chrome and a full horn chrome ring, and carpeting and full wheel covers and a revised grille and tail lights.
In those years there were two choices of engine depending on the transmission that one ordered. The Bel Airs could be ordered in the convertible, the hardtop coupe, the two doors and the four doors sedans, and the Beauville station wagon which had a wood grain trim around the sides of the window. The 1954 cars with stick shaft used the 1953 power glide engine. Over the years, these well known cars became symbols status for an entire generation and went on to become one of the most adorable cars and became a collectors item in the post war era.
The 1954 Chevy Bel Air was one of Chevy’s best yet. In 1954, the Bel Air was introduced as a 1955 model coming with a contemporary and majestic appearance for Chevrolet and was able to outclass the competition. With a six cylinder base engine, a 115 horsepower plant, and at a starting price of slightly over $1000, there could not be a better deal and the vehicle was regarded as America’s first ever low priced hardtop coupe.
The most acclaimed of the Bel Air engine alternatives was the 238 cubic inch V8 small block with ramjet fuel injection with the capacity to deliver one horsepower per cubic inch. This was a first for production cars and apart from being classy and chic; the Bel Air was a machine with speed and with this Chevrolet briskly confirmed their respectability for building performance vehicles.
