This is a really easy, tasty recipe for pizza dough, and for how to make a great pizza at home from scratch. The same dough recipe also makes a pretty good Indian naan bread if cooked slightly differently, and with the addition of an egg.
Pizza made at home is one of the best value meals you can make at home, if you can get all the ingredients you like at a reasonable price.
This recipe for pizza dough makes homemade pizzas that are almost as good as you would get from any Italian restaurant, provided you get it right.
You can use less cheese, sugar and oil if you are watching your weight, although that is what makes it taste so good, if you ask me.
The ingredients are:
- One 7g packet of yeast
- Half a cup of warm water
- Half a cup of milk
- A quarter of a cup of olive oil
- A third of a cup of sugar
- A half teaspoon of salt
- Four cups of plain flour
- Oregano to taste
To start with, you mix the yeast with the warm water, which helps to activate it, then add everything else, but save some of the flour and most of the olive oil for later, as you will need flour to roll out the dough, and olive oil for the pan, and the top of the pizza.
Knead the dough for about five minutes, it should be only a little sticky, not wet. Put the dough in a bowl covered with plastic wrap, and allow to rise in a warm place until it doubles in size. For me this can take overnight, but I don’t wait that long to make the first one.
On a floured surface, roll the dough out as thin as you want it. You can make two large pizzas of a medium thickness with this recipe, or three or four small thin ones.
Heat the oven to a really hot temperature like 240C, oil the pan, oil the top, put a nice sauce on top, (I like steak sauce, barbecue, satay, or tomato paste with a bit of ketchup added).
Add your desired pizza toppings, cover with grated mozzarella cheese, and cook for ten to twelve minutes, or until brown on the base. I like adding a crushed clove of garlic with the sauce, and my favorite toppings are pepperoni, mushroom, capsicum, cooked chicken, bacon, onion, pineapple and prawns. Not all at the same time though.
