For 10 years, this man has eluded the world. He was the man whose name was synonymous with terrorism. This man was Osama Bin Laden. He was the head of Al-Qaeda for 2 decades. He is the man who had master-minded the 9/11 attacks.
He had taken up attacks against American targets before 9/11 too. There were attacks on the American embassies in Nairobi and Dar-es-Salaam. Then in 2000, his group attacked a US navy ship called USS Cole in Yemen.
9/11 however, is what brought Osama Bin Laden to the spotlight. He managed to kill 3000 people in one attack.
After 9/11, the United States decided to find this man and bring him to justice dead or alive. The US invaded Afghanistan and overthrew the Taliban which was ruling Afghanistan, yet, they couldn’t find Osama Bin Laden then.

There were rumours that Osama was hiding in Pakistan, but they weren’t taken too seriously.
Then finally, after almost 10 years after 9/11, Osama Bin Laden was found in Abbotabad in Pakistan. Navy SEALs conducted an operation and had killed him.
Now this is bound to raise questions because the US is reputed to have excellent intelligence gathering capabilities. Yet, the US had to wait for 10 years in order to get this man.
Let us see some theories about it.
1. Presidential election next year
President Obama has been losing public support of lately. The medicare issue, the ongoing recession, the moving of troops from Iraq to Afghanistan has not been very good to his image.
President Obama faces elections next year. Maybe President Obama took up the issue more seriously, pressurizing the Pakistanis to give up his location. When they did, he got the operation done. This has been such a big boost for President Obama’s image. And the killing of Osama Bin Laden holds sentimental value to the American people. President Obama realized this. Looks like President Obama got himself a re-election.
2. The US military’s move to restore confidence
The recent budget showed that the US military was losing face to its people. People have started questioning the need to have so much investment in its military with such little effectiveness. President Obama had decided to reduce military spending in the budget that was discussed recently.
In order to gain face, the CIA must have pressed the Pakistanis to give information. They must have threatened Pakistan with a cut in aid. Pakistan survives due to American aid and any cut could be detrimental.
With information, the CIA conducted the operation and killed Osama Bin Laden. This is going to be a booster for the United States and its armed forces. The American people will see all investments in the military as justified. Questions will not be raised like before. Military spending will rise. The US military will stay in business.
These are two theories that I just thought of. The real reason may be something else, something very different from what we all think. We never know what it could be.
