June 10 is the day of catching lightning into human use. It was on this day, on tenth June in 1752, that the American politician cum scientist Benjamin Franklin collected a charge of some power in a Leyden jar when he was flying a kite during a thunderstorm and his kite was struck by a lightning, enabling him to demonstrate the electrical nature of lightning.
One of the greatest politicians of America
Franklin is hailed as one of the founding fathers of the United States. He had a career as a statesman that spanned more than four decades. Commencing his political service as a legislator in Pennsylvania as well as a diplomat in England and France, he is the only politician to have signed all four documents fundamental to the creation of the U.S.: the Declaration of Independence (1776). No wonder that he was burning with a great desire for knowledge that can be utilized for the welfare of people.
A politician in search of power
Benjamin Franklin, who heralded so many schemes in the political history of America, is hailed as the pioneer of so many reforms in America. He is noted for his numerous civic contributions for the uplift of his society. He developed a library, insurance company, city hospital and academy in Philadelphia that has become today the University of Pennsylvania. He was deeply in search of scientific ideas that could bring prosperity to people. Such an interest made him interested in electricity in the mid-1740s, a time when much was still unknown on the topic. He had spent nearly a decade conducting electrical experiments when he came across this source of power which is still under study.
A man of electric words
It is he who coined a number of terms that are used today in connection with electricity such as battery, conductor and electrician. It is he who also invented the lightning rod, used to protect buildings and ships from the attack of thunderbolt.
Why lightning energy is so important today?
The search for power from sources of energy is the current cause of all political and social unrest in the world. Whether it is the research of the NASA scientists using Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope to detect beams of antimatter produced above thunderstorms on Earth, or whether it is the water electrolyzer projects which are becoming popular with inventors and hobbyists worldwide or whether it is the cold-fusion energy of the Italian scientists, it is the source of power that is going to decide the fate of the future world.
Lightning the great source of energy
It is estimated that a moderate thunderstorm generates several hundred megawatts of electrical power. The scientific journal New Scientist, August 23, 2009 issue reports that the lightning bolts that reach from cloud tops upward into the ionosphere, as high as 90 kilometers, have been measured and the researches at Duke University reveal that they can carry as much energy skyward as ordinary lightning strikes carry to the ground.
Lightning can be a hope for future energy
June 10 is a day of turning point in the search for energy sources. It should lead the world to work together for a peaceful future. If one wants to topple the other and enjoy the profit with a selfish purpose, it will surely end in a fateful doom.
