Examining The Various Elements of A Story

There are certain elements that are necessary to be examined in analyzing a short story. These elements should be considered as questions that need to be answered in your analysis. These elements are; Setting, Character, Mood, Symbolism, Style and Theme. All of these elements play an important role in the analysis of the story.

The Setting provides us with the information about the story’s whereabouts. It includes the answers where and when the story happened. The place as well as the events or time should be properly determined. A good analysis should show the setting element as it is one of the most important part of analysis.

The Character element answers the questions about the casting of the story. Who are these characters in a particular story, what are their roles in the story, as well as what impact did these characters bring to the whole story.

The mood element tells about what you feel or what the reader or audiences fell with the story, as well as what feelings do the story emphasizes. Mood emphasizes emotions that are brought by the story to the readers or audience.

Symbolism answers what object, animals persons or details that represent as symbol of the story. Its function should be clearly stated upon the analysis as well as its relevance to the story itself. Symbols may be in the form of objects or other material things that shows significance to what the story wanted to emphasize. There could be many symbols that could be used in the story but the thing that is the relevant should be selected among the rest. It could have something where we can remember the story upon seeing it, or it could certain quality that represents the story.

Style is how the story is created or constructed. Here the vocabulary as well as the sentence structure is carefully analyzed. It also includes the analysis of what figurative languages that was being used, how it was delivered and so on. Here the capability of the writer is at stake; sometimes is piece is compared to someone’s work.

Another thing is the theme; the theme tells about the underlying meaning of the story, as well as the evidences that supports its meaning. Theme could mean the emphasis of the entire story from its beginning to the end, its meaning and what message it tries to convey to the readers or viewers.
