Most women at one point or another will suffer from a yeast infection. This condition can cause feelings of embarrassment, but the truth of the matter is many women experience yeast infections periodically. Research has shown that nearly 50% of all women will get it at least once, while 5% will suffer from a recurring condition. Having this condition doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with you, what matters most is that you manage it properly.

The symptoms that one woman experiences may be different than another’s. However, the most consistent symptoms are vaginal itching or burning, as well as a yellow/white discharge. Another common symptom is experiencing pain while having sexual intercourse. When this occurs, women should avoid participating in any sexual activity with anyone until treatment is applied. Yeast infections can effect others through intercourse, so it wouldn’t be fair to affect another person’s health especially when you know that you have it.

Often times, the recommendation for treatment made by doctors is Moninstat. It’s designed to address the root of the problem, as it comes in the form of a capsule and is to be applied directly to the vagina. Another often used remedy is Canesten, which works similarly as Monistat. Diagnosis can be tricky sometimes because the symptoms of yeast infections aren’t all that different than Gonnorhea or Chlamydia, this is why it’s important to see a doctor.

The latter represents a far more serious health issue, and for this reason it’s critical to undergo some testing once you start to notice symptoms. Boric acid suppositories have been known to work quite well and have been used as a vaginal infection treatment for awhile, even for infections caused by an overgrowth of yeast. Drugstores and pharmacies carry both Canesten and Monistat, as they are very popular products. They serve as a quick and effective treatment.

While getting treatment is important, doing what you can to prevent it from occurring in the first place is equally as important. Eating a healthy diet is a good place to start, as doing so will decrease your risk for yeast infections. Not to mention the fact that it will improve your overall health and give you more energy. Also, bathe regularly and get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Wearing clothing that allows the vagina to breathe is encouraged, such as cotton underwear and pants, to prevent bacteria from accumulating.
