Migraine is a condition characterized by moderate to severe headache, it also comes with nausea. Usually migraine is more common in women than in men.

Migraine are usually unilateral. A throbbing pain usually affects one half of the head. It is pulsating in nature and lasts from 4 up to 72hrs. It is a common type of headache that occurs with nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light. People with migraines have a warning symptom, called aura. This a           ura happens before the actual headache begins. It is a group of symptoms including vision disturbance. It serves as a warning sign that a bad headache is about to happen.

Migraine is caused by the occurrence of abnormal brain activity. There are several factors that may contribute to migraines. It is triggered by stress, certain foods, environmental factors or something else. There is no medical explanation as to why migraine occurs. Currently, medical experts believe that migraine starts when there is an attack in the brain and involves various nerve pathways and chemicals. This affect blood flow in the brain and the surrounding tissues.

What triggers migraine?

Since there are several factors that trigger migraine, here’s a list of some of it:

Bright lights

Certain odors or perfumes

Hormones

Change in sleep pattern

Exercise

Loud noises

Too much heat

Missed meals

Physical stress

Emotional stress

Smoking

The kind of foods eaten can also trigger migraine. Here are the list of foods that may trigger it:

Baked goods

Chocolates

Dairy products

Foods with monosodium glutamate or MSG

Some Fruits

Nuts

Onions

Peanut Butter

Treatment for Migraine:

To date, there is still no specific cure for migraine headaches. However, the symptoms can be prevented.

Drink water to avoid dehydration especially if there is vomiting

Rest in a dark and quiet room

Place a cold cloth in your head

Over the counter medications can also be taken. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen or aspirin can help relieve the pain during migraine attacks. These drugs can lessen pain, the feeling of nausea and emotional distress. This may reduce the number of attacks, stop the migraine once early symptoms occur and treat the pain and other symptoms.
