Healthy Nutrition For Athletes Should Include Alkaline Foods

When searching for the best nutrition for athletes, alkaline foods are an important consideration. The alkaline or acid forming aspects of foods become an issue when the body burns them for fuel. Upon metabolization, they produce an alkaline or acid ash. That is why everything consumed has an impact on the acid/alkaline balance throughout the body, often referred to as pH balance. In order to maintain proper pH balance, naturopathic doctors and other experts suggest a ratio of 80% alkaline foods to only 20% acid foods. Most people are living with this 80/20 alkaline/acid proportion upside down. This can impact fitness levels in various ways and definitely should be taken into consideration when seeking nutrition for athletes.

The body is so perfectly programmed that it will not permit the blood pH balance to diverge far from 7.4. It will do whatever is essential to alkalize the acid in the bloodstream, even if that means plucking calcium from healthy bones. When there are not enough alkaline foods in the diet to help manage that delicate blood pH balance, the body has to use calcium from bones in order to counteract excess acid in the bloodstream. You can clearly imagine how that causes bone weakness, and that’s the last thing anyone wants when buying the most effective nutrition for athletes.

Here is my own story of how alkaline foods created positive results for me. The majority of the cartilage in my right knee was removed at age 18, after a back yard football injury. So now my right knee is bone on bone. Before I made dietary changes in my life a Doctor told me I had the knee of a 72 year-old man, but I was only 39 at the time. He said I would need a knee replacement in a few years. Well, it’s been over 10 years and I just completed a 3 hour, 23-mile mountain bike ride over punishing terrain in the Arizona desert, and my right knee feels as strong as my other knee, without needing surgery or drugs. I also snow ski moguls all day when I can. Other men I know can’t fathom how this is feasible. I can only say the difference is that I know the need for alkaline foods in a diet that provides the most beneficial nutrition for athletes.

While eliminating several acid foods from my diet, once I became informed of the need for more alkaline foods, I started to discover more ways to get them. It’s like what happens if you buy a blue car, suddenly you begin to identify blue cars everywhere. So, now that you are mindful of this demand for alkaline foods when searching for the highest quality nutrition for athletes, you’ll begin to see them as well.
