Mononucleosis, which is commonly known as the Kissing disease, is a viral infection that causes fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph glands, especially in the neck area. This is also termed as Glandular fever, Pfeiffers Disease, or Filatov’s Disease. This disease is caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus, which is a one type of the herpes virus. This is the most common virus in humans.

The disease is characterized by fever, sore throat and body malaise, along with other possible signs and symptoms. The common symptoms of Mononucleosis or Kissing Disease are sore throat, fever, Weight loss, Malaise and pharyngeal inflammation. vomiting. petechiae and loss of appetite can also be observed. Since there is an infection, enlargement of the lymph nodes can also be seen, splenomegaly or enlargement of the spleen, hepatitis, and hemolysis.

Mononucleosis is a very contagious disease as it is often spread by saliva and close contact. It usually occurs most often in those ages 15 to 17. However, it should also be noted that the disorder may develop at any age.

Kissing disease will begin slowly with body aches or fatigue, general ill feeling, headache, and sore throat. The sore throat will eventually get worse. You will notice whitish to yellow covering in your tonsils. Lymph nodes become swollen and painful because of the infection.

Treatment for Mononucleosis:

The disease is usually self limiting. Enough rest is recommended for the person who has the disease, especially during the acute phase of the infection. Activity can be resumed once acute symptoms have been resolved. Heavy lifting or heavy activities should be avoided because there is a great risk of splenic rupture. You have to take note that during the onset of the disease, there is splenomegaly, hence there is a possibility of rupture based on the activities the person is doing.

Tips on how to prevent the disease:

Drinking lots of fluids can also help relieve the symptoms. Gargling with warm salt water will help in providing comfort to the person suffering with the inflamed tonsils.

If mononucleosis will not be treated, there is a possibility of death if the person has weak immune system.
