HVAC mechanics employed by companies that provide industrial and commercial equipment repair and maintenance services earned an average annual salary of $45,160 and an average hourly wage of $21.71, according to the BLS.

Highest Paying Areas for HVAC Technicians

HVAC mechanics working in Alaska, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and the District of Columbia received higher earnings than the national average. As of May 2009, HVAC technician salaries in these areas ranged from $52,650 to $56,540 and hourly earnings ranged from $25.31 to $27.19. HVAC technicians working in metropolitan areas like the Napa, Oakland and San Jose areas in California, the Champaign area in Illinois and the Lowell area in Massachusetts earned the highest wages in the U.S. HVAC technician salaries in these metropolitan areas ranged from $62,050 to $70,220 and hourly wages ranged from $29.83 to $33.76, according to the BLS.

Highest Job Concentration Areas for HVAC Technicians

States with the highest job concentration of HVAC mechanics include Delaware, Florida, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. As of May 2009, HVAC technicians employed in these states made from $38,750 to $45,100 in annual wages and $18.63 to $21.68 in hourly wages, according to the BLS. Metropolitan areas with the highest job concentration of HVAC mechanics include Cape Coral, Panama City, Lakeland and Sebastian areas in Florida and the Harrisonburg area in Virginia.
