Feel like you can flow together with the finest? Konami’s rap Karaoke title Def Jam Rapstar allows hip-hop up-and-comers place their rhyme skills up to the test. You could rap along to any of the game’s 45 licensed tracks from the likes of  Kanye West,  Lil Wayne, Nas, LL Cool J, A Tribe Called Quest and more, or you could freestyle over rhythms from producers like Nitti Beats or Danja.

Def Jam Rapstar provides 3 modes to play. Party mode allows you battle it out with friends or join forces in a duet in tracks like Kanye West’s “Goldigger,” where one player takes after Kanye’s flow while the other takes the role of Jaime Foxx and sings together to the chorus. In Career mode you will be able to perform licensed tracks to figure your way towards superstardom. Top performances can garner microphones, in-game currency that unlocks fresh tracks, effects and backgrounds that can be used throughout the rest of the game.

To gain maximum mics and street cred, Def Jam Rapstar gauges your performance based on lyrics, pitch and timing. The game specifies points by syllable and vocal nuances, bringing auto tune an even greater pain than it already is. After putting in some time with the game, it is almost necessary to have at the least some familiarity with the song selected, otherwise you could trip over a couple of lyrics. Nothing some run-throughs with a given track can not fix. This game was developed for fans of hip-hop, so anybody with an interest in the genre and a liking for rhythm games can take a few flubs and carry the rest of the track having no problem. The show must go on, correct?

Freestyle mode brings in the game’s online community element, where players having proper lyrical savvy can record their performances employing a system-specific camera. Videos could then be edited using visual effects, color palettes, and filters. When you’re done crafting your video, upload it to Def Jam’s community web site for reassessment by your fellow peers. With Def Jam’s participation, who knows, maybe you will get discovered.
