Bad breath happens when odor producing bacteria in your dog’s mouth, lungs or stomach build up. Continued bad breath can mean that you dog need better dental care or that something is wrong in his gastrointestinal tract, liver or kidneys. In all cases bad breath is a red flag that should be investigated.
Canine bad breath can be caused by dental or gum disease. Small dogs are prone to plaque and tarter. Persistent bad breath can also indicate larger medical problems in the mouth, respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, liver and kidneys.

Your veterinarian will have to examine your dog to determine what is causing his bad breath. If plaque is the problem your dog might need his teeth cleaned. The cause could be your dog’s diet. You might have to change your dog’s regular food. If the cause is gastrointestinal or an abnormality in you dogs liver, kidneys or lungs your veterinarian will decide on a course of treatment.
Some people think bad breath in dogs just happens when they get to be a certain age.
Take your dog in for regular checkups to make sure he has no other medical problems that may cause bad breath. Make sure your veterinarian checks your dog’s teeth and breathe. Feed your dog a high quality easy to digest food. Brush your dog’s teeth everyday if you can. Use toothpaste made for dogs. Human tooth paste will up set your dogs stomach.
Provide safe chew toys that will clean your dog’s teeth. Give your dog good treats that will improve his breath.
There are many products that will cover up your dog’s bad breath but they are only temporary. You must find the cause and treat it.
