I use to suffer from server insomnia. I just couldn’t fall asleep at bedtime. My body was physically drained and my mind was run down and I wanted to go to sleep. So I did some research and the solution to my insomnia was food. Certain foods believe it or not can work as an alternative sleep medicine to help you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

Two of my favorite foods to use as an alternative sleep medicine to help me get to sleep and stay asleep at nighttime are warm milk and honey.  I am sure you have seen your grandmothers drink warm milk and honey before bedtime and the reason why is because milk contains tryptophans which is an amino acid that helps increase serotonin levels in your body which is need to help calm and soothe you before bedtime so you fall asleep easier. Milk also contains calcium in it which is a mineral needed to help the whole entire body relax by calming the nerves in it. The reason the honey is added to the warm milk is not only to help sweeten it up, but it is also contains B vitamins in it that help relieve stress and help keep your mood positive before bedtime so you don’t stay up worrying and thinking to much.

Now if you’re not into the warm milk and honey thing you can always have a cup of dark hot chocolate made with milk. Dark chocolate also helps release that serotonin chemical into your body fast to help calm and relax your nerves before bedtime. Heck it will even make you feel very happy and calm and we all know when we are happy and calm before bedtime it is much easier to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

Another food to consider munching on before bedtime to help you fall asleep easier are nuts such as almonds. Almonds contain tons of magnesium in them which is a mineral used to help relax the muscles and nerves in the body. Almonds also contain B vitamins in them which help you handle and relieve stress from you body and mind easier so you can stay relaxed and calm before bedtime. Munching on almonds before bedtime as a bedtime snack can even help raise the serotonin levels in your body as well which can help you fall asleep faster and better. If almonds are not your favorite nut to munch on try peanuts and walnuts they contain the same nutrients in them and will help you feel sleepy and fall asleep.

Cheese and crackers are another great snack to have before bedtime. Cheese contains tryptophan which once again helps release that serotonin into the body to help relax it. Crackers contain carbohydrates in them which help release serotonin into the body as well. The higher your serotonin levels are in your body and brain the easier it is to fall asleep and stay asleep at nighttime. Without serotonin in our bodies we wouldn’t be able to get to sleep at all and we would always be stressed out to know end.

Some excellent fruits to snack on to use as an alternative sleeping medicine to help get you to sleep at night are bananas, berries, grapes, and raisins. These fruits also contain that lovely happy sleepy amino acid in it called tryptophans. They even contain B vitamins and potent antioxidants in them that help fight off the free radical cells in our bodies that make us stressed out an uneasy. When we are stressed out before bedtime we have a much harder time falling asleep and staying asleep. These fruits even contain magnesium which is that important mineral that helps our bodies relax which I have already mentioned.

See foods can really be used as an alternative sleeping medicine to help you fall asleep at nighttime. Now that you know some of the foods to try maybe you can finally get a goodnight sleep and wake up refreshed in the morning.
