Fractional Laser

Fractional laser is a kind of laser used during laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing is a technique used during laser surgery wherein molecular bonds are dissolved by laser. It is used for the treatment of wrinkles, sun damage, solar lentigenes, scars, actinic keratosis, stretch marks  and telangiectasias or “spider veins”. Fractional laser skin resurfacing  can be of two kinds – ablative and non-ablative. It usually acheives comparable skin improvements as that obtained through other methods of conventional ablative laser skin resurfacing but is known to be more safer because of fewer potential side effects. Commonl examples of fractional laser include Fraxel and Pixel, but there are many more.

Fractional lasers work through photothermolysis. The process of directing a light source onto a selected section of the skin to damage it is technically called “selective photothermolysis”; where “thermolysis” refers to ‘decomposition by heat’ and “photo” refers to ‘light’.“Fractional Photothermolysis”, on the other hand, rather than targetting the whole section of the skin, seeks to only damage certain zones, that is, targets discreet dot-like areas on the skin to be treated. This allows the other zones within it to be left untouched, and thus the damage done by this way is also only fractional, unlike selective photothermolysis. The skin also heals much faster than if the whole area were treated.

There are 2 kinds of fractional lasers – ablative and non ablative. “Ablative” lasers, also known as skin resurfacing lasers, work by briefly directing an intense burst of laser energy onto the surface of the skin. This energy causes water within the surface layers of the skin to heat up, leading to evaporation of both the water and the tissue of the skin. This way, every time the laser passes over the skin, some portion of the outermost layers of the skin is removed slowly and in a  controlled way to the appropriate depth. The so called non-ablative lasers, on the other hand, are used as an  aesthetic equipment for skin rejuvenation. These lasers havea much lower energy level than ablative lasers. They try to cause damage within the dermal layer of the skin without affecting he outer epidermal layers. This leads to a shorter recovery period after the treatment and reduces the chances of complications.
