Hillshire Farm Deli Select Mesquite Smoked Turkey Breast is one of the luncheon meat products that I purchase from time to time. For me, it has some pluses and minuses, but overall is a fine product that works for my purposes.
I really enjoy good turkey for sandwiches and I’ve especially grown to love the mesquite flavor. It adds a zesty quality that gives the turkey an edge over the more regular oven roasted taste, for example. While the product has a hint of the mesquite, I actually don’t believe it is strong enough. There are other luncheon products on the market that really have that mesquite flavor highlighted, and I just don’t get that as much from this item.
Hillshire Farm Deli Select Mesquite Smoked Turkey Breast comes in a fairly compact red box. I like that the box is appropriately sized for the product. At the same time, though, I’m not sure that I like that the turkey is practically compressed inside a plastic wrap. There isn’t anything re-sealable about the wrap so it’s hard to keep the product as fresh as another type of container would provide.
Actually, there’s something about the slimy feeling that this plastic wrap gives the turkey that I just don’t like. I wish I knew how to properly describe this, but the turkey slices have this slimy quality that is rather off putting. I don’t like the look or the texture, in fact. While the taste is acceptable, it lacks an aesthetic appeal.
Maybe this is the economy variety. Hillshire has other products that are more expensive and much tastier. They are not packaged in the same manner as this product and are just all around better. This version feels more processed and perhaps that is the difference that I sense.
So, the long and short of it is that I like Hillshire Farm Deli Select Mesquite Smoked Turkey Breast, but it is not my first choice. I tend to buy it when it’s on sale and my preferred choices are not. If they would add a tad more flavor and figure out how to reduce the slime quotient, I’d buy it more often.
