Pillsbury Savorings Crescent Pastry Puffs: Mozzarella & Pepperoni

One of my favorite new products on the market is Pillsbury Savorings Crescent Pastry Puffs in the Mozzarella & Pepperoni variety.  Though not the perfect dish, it is tasty, quick to prepare, and makes for a good lunch, dinner, or snack.

The package describes the item as “bite-sized pastries stuffed with mozzarella cheese & pepperoni in a red tomato sauce.”  They are meant to be cooked in either an oven or toaster oven.  Now to be honest, I’ve yet to get them to cook perfectly, and I’m not sure why except that I use a convection oven.  I’ve tried to make various adjustments that normally work, but they don’t with this product.  However, it’s still one of my favorites and I just live with the imperfections.

What I love about the product is that they are truly bite size.  It’s the perfect fit in that regard.

The most important part of any food is, of course, the taste, and these taste terrific for the most part. The pepperoni taste is very good and pleasing.  I like the mozzarella, but it gets a little lost with the pepperoni, which is definitely the predominant taste of the two in my opinion.

The worst part really is the pastry puff, but then again, that goes in with my cooking problem with the product.  Sometimes the bottom of the pastries end up with a film like quality.  It’s like a pastry flake that isn’t as appealing, either visually or in taste.  I’m actually not even sure how to describe it, but it’s the bottom of the puffs that is sometimes at issue.  It’s still okay, and the contents of the puffs tend to overwhelm that thin, not quite tasty puff bottom.

The other part of the product that doesn’t quite work as planned is that the contents are a bit more runny then what you see on the box.  On the box, the completed puffs are very tidy on the plate, but most of the ones I make have the sauce dripping over somewhat, so they are messier to eat than what it appears.

Regardless of my issues, I do like the product and it’s one I’ve purchased many times since it first came out and I even have on in the freezer right now, so I definitely recommend it.
