Side Effects of Clonazepam (Rivotril)

Clonazepam, also known by the brand names Rivotril and Klonopin, is a prescription medication used in the treatment of conditions like seizures and panic attacks. Clonazepam can be used for long-term treatment or to control an active seizure. There are many potential symptoms that can arise with use of clonazepam and it is habit-forming. The side effects of clonazepam include drowsiness, dizziness, changes in appetite, and changes in behavior.

According to the National Institutes of Health, Rivotril is a type of benzodiazepine that slows activity in the nervous system. Clonazepam is frequently used to treat epilepsy, a common condition that causes seizures. It is also used to help people with chronic panic attacks. It is used in both injected and oral forms. As a tablet, it is taken one to three times daily depending upon the condition being treated and the needs of the patient.

The most common side effects of clonazepam or Rivotril are drowsiness, lightheadedness, dizziness or loss or coordination, impaired cognitive function, appetite loss, and loss of sexual desire and function. Other side effects of clonazepam can include dry mouth or throat, excess saliva, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, menstrual cramps, pain in the face, trouble swallowing, blurred vision, and slurred speech or voice changes.

Certain side effects of clonazepam or Rivotril are more serious than others and may possibly be related to an allergic reaction. According to the Mayo Clinic, serious side effects of clonazepam include sore throat, aches and pain throughout the body, loss of interest, irritability, nervousness, behavioral changes, thoughts of suicide, blood in urine, and loss of voice altogether. Fever, chills, and other flu symptoms can indicate a severe reaction. An allergic reaction can be responsible for swelling, itching, hives, and difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these complications develop.

Clonazepam can interact with certain other medications to worsen existing side effects or generate other adverse reactions. According to the National Health Service of the UK, drugs to avoid include valproate, rifampicin, primidone, cimetidine, carbamazepine, phenytoin, and phenobarbital. Tell your doctor if you are using these or any other medications before taking clonazepam. Avoid drinking alcohol while using clonazepam.
