 The general rules for capitalization are not too difficult and are easily memorized. Don’t be guilty of putting the time and effort into writing an amazing article that ends up rarely getting read because readers are reluctant to read past your article title. Take these easy to follow steps and write your article titles with confidence knowing they are correctly capitalized.

Always capitalize the beginning letter of the first and last word of your article title. This rule is to be strictly adhered to.

Capitalize the words in your article title that are important. This may be a bit vague, but it is the standard guideline to follow. The next three steps will help guide you through the haze if you are unsure what constitutes “important” words.

Apply lowercase for the beginning letter of all short prepositions used in the body of your article title. Examples of short propositions include: as, at, by, for, in, of, off, on, out, to and up.

Apply lowercase for the beginning letter of all conjunctions used in the body of your article title. Examples of conjunctions include: and, but, for, nor, or, so and yet.

Apply lowercase for the beginning letter of all articles used in the body of your article title. Examples of articles include: a, an, and the.

When you start writing titles, be willing to be creative. An effective title will tease the reader to want to know more. Use words and phrases that people are able to easily read and understand.  Avoid titles that are lengthy.
