Ethernet can best be described as local area network that is widely installed on computers at business or home. Ethernet was first designed by Xerox. Its design was based on an earlier version called Alohanet. Because of its success after its release, there was more advancement made to it.
You may be wondering how the name Ethernet came about but it was a developer who was working on the project who suggested the name and it stuck. Ether, which is known to be the compound which enables the transfer of light throughout the universe, is similar to regular cables because it is also an active medium for light transfer. This is also probably a reason why the name was chosen.
The initial idea for Ethernet was for it to allow different computers to communicate through the use of a shared coaxial cable. In fact, the methods that were to be used were very similar to those of radio transmissions. Because of the shared nature of the computers, it was only natural that any information sent to just one computer was received by all of them. This happens even if the information is meant to be for one computer and not only when it concerns a number of computers.
Ethernet uses wires which have been twisted as is the basic design that belongs to local area network. In as much as cables are used, the same can be applied to wireless Ethernet. Other devices can be connected to the Ethernet and use the Carrier Sense Multiple Access technology. Ethernet is quite fast as it can transfer up to 10MBps. This is why it is so widely used in offices where it makes more sense to transfer files via this route than to copy paste them through a CD or flash drive repeatedly!
Types of Ethernet
There are a variety of types of Ethernet. One of them is fast Ethernet. This type allows you to transfer up to 100MBps. Gigabit Ethernet will let you transfer 1000MBps with the last one being 10 Gigabit Ethernet which has a transfer rate of up to 10 billion MBps. Of the three, gigabit Ethernet is the best to use for large internet networks.
