This classic film is about the life of Tony Montana (played by Al Pacino) a Cuban exile who goes to Miami in search of work and to chase the American dream. He and his friend Manny Ribera (played by Steven Bauer) quit a dish cleaning job in a fast-food van and take a handover drug job for a Miami mobster Frank Lopez (played by Robert Loggia). Later Tony is given the opportunity to make a lot more money by trafficking drugs from Bolivia but it turns out to be dangerous. During this time, Tony starts to take interest in Frank’s girlfriend Elvira Hancock (played by Michelle Pfeiffer). Tony’s relationship with his mother Mamma Montana (played by Miriam Colon) and younger sister Gina Montana (played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) is affected in the process. Tony’s mother fears that her son will take Gina over to the dark side. Gina on the other hand is more than happy to help Tony share his wealth. Tony, being the protective brother he is, is very wary of other men. Especially when they touch her and end up feeling his wrath…Even his own friend Manny starts to fall in love with her. Throughout the film, you see many bloody attacks such as an enforcer being hung from a helicopter, various stabbings, shootings, and the climax in which Tony faces an army of Bolivian gunmen in his on home.
Being a gangster fan, this was one film I had to own on DVD. It is one of Brian De Palma’s/Al Pacino’s film I could watch over and over again. The action in this film keeps me entertained and watching from start to finish. It also brings out the best in Al Pacino. After watching Al Pacino’s performance in The Godfather and then in Scarface, you can clearly see why he is an acting legend. You also get to see a stunning performance by Michelle Pfeiffer as he good working relationship with A Pacino shines through. One of my favourite bloody scenes in this film must be the chainsaw bathroom scene. The film has also given us great quotes such as “In this country, first you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the woman” “I’m Tony Montana! You f**k with me, you f**k with the best!”and the most famous quote “You wanna fuck with me? Okay. You wanna play rough? Okay. Say hello to my little friend!”
Overall, this is a must watch film, but keep in mind with the age rating of 18 there is a lot of blood, drugs and bad language from most if not all actors.
What did you think of Scarface?
