Side Effects of Flurazepam (Dalmane)

Flurazepam is a prescription drug often sold under the brand name Dalmane. Flurazepam belongs to a class of medications known as a benzodiazepine, a type of drug that effects the central nervous system. Flurazepam is a short-term use sleep aid that slows activity in the brain to treat insomnia. The side effects of flurazepam or Dalmane include drowsiness into the day, blurred vision, and general apathy.

Flurazepam functions as a central nervous system depressant that calms the body to help sleep occur and remain at a high quality. The pill is taken at nighttime and insomnia symptoms should generally dissipate over the course of a few days to a week or so. According to the Mayo Clinic, the initial prescribed dosage is 30 milligrams per night. Because it can cause a dependance, the prescription is typically gradually reduced over time.

The side effects of flurazepam or Dalmane can include prolonged drowsiness, dizziness, disinterest, lack of focus, headache, and blurred vision. These may reduce after a few days of use, but inform your doctor if they continue to persist over an extended period of time. Other possible side effects of flurazepam are dry mouth, hallucinations, nausea, diarrhea, pain of the joints or muscles, discouragement, and other mood alterations.

Certain side effects of flurazepam can be serious or indicative of an allergic reaction. WebMD reports that some severe side effects of flurazepam are tremors, restlessness, euphoria, loss of memory, depression, fainting, and flu-like symptoms. Hives, skin rash, swelling of the face or throat, itching, and difficulty breathing are common symptoms of an allergic reaction. If any of these side effects manifest themselves, talk to your doctor immediately.

Certain drugs should be avoided while using flurazepam as they may exacerbate side effects or create another type of reaction. According to WebMD, flurazepam is highly interactive with sodium oxybate, a drug used in the treatment of narcolepsy. The National Health Service of the UK adds cimetidine, a medication used to treat gastrointestinal conditions, and rifampicin, a type of antibiotic. Tell your doctor about any other drugs or supplements you are using before taking flurazepam.
