Ritalin : Is it Really Safe?

What is Ritalin?

Ritalin (methylphenidate) is a stimulant.  It reacts with chemicals in the brain and nervous system that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.  Ritalin is used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD),  It is also prescribed for narcolepsy (uncontrollable desire to sleep) and other sleep related disorders.  

Concerns regarding Ritalin

  • Ritalin can cause life threatening side effects if used within 14 days of consuming MAO (Mono Amine Oxidase) inhibitors like Azilect (Rasagiline), Furoxone (Furazolidone), etc. Azilect is used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Furoxone is used to treat diarhea.

  • Regular use of Ritalin can slow down normal growth (height and weight) in children. 

  • Ritalin is found to be highly addictive.  United States Department of Justice has classified this drug with morphine and cocaine.

  • Insomnia (inability to sleep well) is another common side effect of this drug. 

  • Ritalin has caused nervousness, irritability and anger among its users.  

  • Anorexia (loss of appetite) is another observed side effect of Ritalin. Many people have reported this side effect. 

  • People with diabetes mellitus have reported a rise in sugar level after consuming Ritalin.  It is suggested that they avoid this drug.  If it is inevitable they have to closely monitor their blood sugar levels post consumption.

  • Few users of Ritalin reported hair loss.  

  • Skin rash, fever, burning pain, nausea, dizziness, palpitations, urticaria, peeling skin, red blotches all over the skin, drowsiness, headache, stomach pain, blurred vision, depression, dry mouth, tics, urinary tract infection, muscular spasms, variations in blood pressure, heart beat and pulse are reported by various users of Ritalin all over the world.

  • One Mr Lawrence Smith has stated that his child lost its life due to Ritalin usage.


Based on the above facts, one can conveniently conclude that Ritalin should not be consumed if it is not prescribed by a certified medical practitioner.  People who are consuming this drug should report any of the above side effects to the doctor immediately.  The authorities all over the world should take appropriate action regarding Ritalin.  After all one takes medicine to get cured, not to acquire more sickness.
