After He Beat Me

After he beat me and left me for dead

Lying in the middle of the living room floor

Blood pouring from my mouth, my head

I lay there, eyes closed, not wanting to move

Darkness so very black, empty and cold

He said he loved me, I know now that he lied

Oh how that hurt me so very deep inside

The wounds they may heal, but the scars will remain

The pain lies buried deep within my brain

I hide it and yet it peers out from time to time

Broken bones, the shattered remains

Of a time in my life I’d like best to forget

The honeymoon stage: he brings me flowers

Smiles so sweetly and becomes the man I used to know

The man who swore he’d never hurt me

He tricks me into believing him all over again

Until he accuses me of cheating with his best friend

The yelling, screaming, the fists pounding my back

Bruises, broken bones, bleeding lips

Speak of the pain that my heart has felt

Blaming myself for falling for his lies

Tearing myself apart for being weak and foolish

I try to become everything he wants me to be

An impossible ideal, this I know

The honeymoon stage: he visits me in the hospital

Bringing me balloons, stuffed bears and a card

This time it’s too late, the pain is too great

I close my eyes, let out a long sigh

And quietly disappear into the stillness of the dark

Where there is no pain, no torture, no lies

I have at long last escaped him and his brutality

And am finally at peace forever more.. Forever more..

This poem is dedicated to all those going through a domestic violent situation. In 2005, at least 1,181 women were murdered by an intimate partner. That’s an average of three women every day. Of all the women murdered in the U.S., about one-third were killed by an intimate partner. According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, which includes crimes that were not reported to the police, 232,960 women in the U.S. were raped or sexually assaulted in 2006.  It is time to put a stop to this. It is time to put your foot down and your hands up. Vote for stronger, tougher punishments for crimes against women. Let your congressmen, senators, governors and mayors know that we, as a whole, will NOT tolerate this any more.
