Thyroid Biopsy


A thyroid biopsy procedure is a procedure where in a small part of the tissue that is suspected to have tumor or cancer. The thyroid biopsy procedure is done very carefully, not to touch any part aside from the tissue that will be taken because this will have an effect to the thyroid especially the voice box. The thyroid biopsy procedure can be done by fine needle biopsy and an open surgery biopsy.

Fine-needle biopsyis done by inserting a thin needle through the skin and into the thyroid gland. This is a preferred procedure than an open surgery.

Open Biopsyis by having a cut or an incision through the skin to see the thyroid gland and get a small part of the thyroid gland. This is done when other test have not found the cause of the symptoms.


As a result of the procedure the thyroid biopsy procedure is used to find the cause of a nodule in the thyroid gland. Then the nodule will have an imaging test performed to help determine if it is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). If after the imaging test still it is not clearly define the abnormality then a biopsy may be necessary. The results may be delivered as soon as correct and clear findings will be detected.


This depends on to what procedure the patient undergone. For fine-needle biopsy, there are less side effects than an open surgery. Needle biopsy is less invasive than an open surgery but both will have larger incision in the skin and may need a local or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s choice and doctor’s advice. For open surgery there will be redness and numbness in the site of the incision. The recovery time is brief and patients can soon resume their normal activities.


Thyroid biopsy needle is most requested procedure. Thyroid biopsy needle delivers up to 95% accuracy. And is believed to be a reliable method of obtaining the sample that can help diagnose whether it is malignant or not. At the same time it is less painful, less time during the procedure, less side effects and recovery is faster than open surgery procedure.
