When a patient gets diagnosed of thyroid cancer, the next best thing to do is to know all the necessary information regarding thyroid cancer treatment. Each treatment depends on the type and extent of thyroid cancer an individual has. People suffering from thyroid cancer have four standard treatments. These are:

  • Thyroid Hormone Therapy – This type of cancer treatment is used to remove hormones. It stops cancer cells from growing and blocks hormone actions.

  • Chemotherapy – This type of cancer treatment uses drugs to kill the cancer cells and stop them from dividing.

  • Radiation Therapy with Radioactive Iodine (RAI) Therapy – This type of treatment involves radiation. Radiation helps kill cancer cells and keep them from growing.

  • Surgery – This is a process where an individual’s thyroid cancer is removed.

Thyroid Cancer Treatment Radioactive Iodine

One of the thyroid cancer treatments is Radioactive Iodine. This type of therapy is also known as internal radiotherapy and uses iodine which has radiation as treatment for thyroid cancer. It circulates radioactive iodine throughout the individual’s blood stream. The cancer cells pick up the iodine as soon as it is circulated in the body. The cancer cells will then be killed by the radiation in the iodine. This treatment is safe since it does not affect other cells in the body except for thyroid cells. Only thyroid cells pick up the iodine. When this treatment is done, physicians will then assess if the cancer cells are picking up the iodine or not. An individual who undergoes this treatment must stay in the hospital for a couple of days and must not drink or eat anything during the whole duration for the body to absorb the iodine. To be able to check if radiation has dropped to a safer level, an individual will then be scanned.

Thyroid Cancer Treatment Options

Thyroid cancer treatments vary depending on the type and extent of cancer a person has. Thyroid cancer treatments help kill cancer cells and treat thyroid cancer. A person needs all the necessary information regarding treatment options to have a better understanding on how thyroid cancer can be treated. All thyroid cancer treatments have one goal; cure thyroid cancer as much as possible, if not kill cancer cells and prevent them from spreading to other parts of the body.

Thyroid Cancer Treatment Side Effects

Cancer is something that no one would want to have. Cancer damages healthy cells and tissues. If left untreated, cancer puts a person’s health and life at risk. People who undergo cancer treatment normally are concerned if the treatment would be successful as well as the side effects it may entail. The success of every cancer treatment as well as thyroid cancer treatment lies between the physician and patient. Just like any other illnesses and disease being treated, thyroid cancer treatment also has side effects. The side effects of thyroid cancer treatment depend on which treatment was used and the extent of cancer a person has. Side effects of a certain treatment are disclosed by physicians to patients prior to starting any treatment.
