It Is Not the Same as a Pharmacist

It takes many years of schooling to become a pharmacist but you can become a pharmacy technician in a year or less. Pharmacy technicians do not have the same high level of responsibility as pharmacists, but they do often help the pharmacists with their job. In their period of study they must work hard to graduate. Of course, that doesn’t mean it is easy!

Some of the tasks that pharmacy technicians perform include labelling and dispensing medications, maintaining patient profiles, taking blood pressures, and many other routine tasks. These are the tasks that the pharmacist will oversee an delegate to the pharmacy technician.  Althought the tasks are often routine, they are just as important as any other job that needs to be completed in a pharmacy or medical setting.

You Need Good Customer Service Skills

Customer service skills are essential to pharmacy technicians because they are often the ones to talk face to face with clients. Since clients are often distressed or anxious due to illness of themselves or loved ones, tact and patience are necessary.  They need a soothing voice an someone that will be calm and patient when answering their questions.  The pharmacy technician is often the first and last point of contact for people when they are at a pharmacy, so you social skills are usually thing thing that will give them a positive or a negative experience.

You Need to Have an Eye for Detail

Pharmacy technicians cannot afford to miss out on the little details because those little details could make the difference between clients getting better and clients getting sicker – or even dying! Pharmacy technicians must be able to read documents thoroughly and listen to the concerns of their clients.  There is no room for daydreaming or distractions when you are on the job!

There Is a High Demand for Pharmacy Technicians

Pharmacy technicians are needed in many areas including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and retail outlets. Each place that may hire pharmacy technicians will have a set of skills that is more important than others.  As the needs in health care industries increase, more jobs open up.
