Till some years ago, any new industrial or consumer product that came out in the market had to have a prototype for ensuring proper application of the design and use by the manufacturer. There was an abundance of clay or wood miniatures and models. Then came the laser sintering technology that gave birth to plastic samples that could be built from a CAM or CAD drawing and resin. The latest trend is known as rapid prototyping.

Rapid prototyping is an advanced technology coupled with machine speeds and flexibility as well as sophistication of computer interface that allows for exact molds for plastic or metal sample parts to be manufactured cost effectively.

Makino, global advanced machining technology giant’s application and technical engineers say that such technology allows for manufacturing steps to be cut. These steps are also possible because today we can mil steel as speedily and inexpensively as other lighter materials like aluminum. 

Rapid prototyping has allowed manufacturers and mould builders to come up with applications that can be used to make more products instantly. This makes sure that there customers get their new products quickly and they can be marketed right away.

Other prototypes do not carry the actual properties that the customer is looking to simulate. Rapid prototyping allows for prototypes to be made with the same raw material that will be used to manufacture the end product.

Where other processes got prehardened or hardened steel molds in 10 to 12 weeks; rapid prototyping ensures you get them in 5 to 6 weeks. This is a great time saver helping the customer get his product in the market as soon and as inexpensively as possible.
