The Philippines consists of 7100 Islands which is categorized into three, the Luzon, Visayas, and the Mindanao. The capital city of the Philippines is Manila and the national language is Tagalog. The Philippines have 175 languages and four of them are now extinct.

The smallest freshwater fish in the world as listed in the Guinness World Records is the pygmy goby. They are colorless  and almost see though fish that weighs only about 4-5 mg. They are found in the Luzon area in the Philippines. Most malepygmy’s are 7.5 to 9.9 milimeter long.

The largest fish in the world can also be found in the Philippines. This is the Whale Shark or locally known as Butanding. Whale sharks are about 50 feet and even longer and they weigh several tons. They are mostly seen in Donsol, Sorsogon. Although they are the largest fish in the world, they are very gentle. The best time for Whale Shark watching is during the months of November to May.

The worlds largest pearl is also found in the Philippines. It was discovered in 1934 in the Palawan sea. The pearl was names Pearl of Allah or Pearl of Lao Tzu because the surface looked liked the image of a turbaned face. It measures 9.4 inches long and weighs about 12 pounds.

The largest and rare giant flower are also found in the Philippines. They are the Rafflesia. They are wild flowers that grows in the Mindanao forests. Filipinos calls it uroy or pungapung.

The longest christmas in the world are celebrated in the Philippines. Christmas carols can be heard begining September up until the first week of January. They also start decorating around that time also. Christmas is a very festive time in the Philippines as this become a reunion for familys.


You can also find some of the world’s exotic birds in the Philippines. One of the most endangered spicies is the Kalangay or the Philippine cockatoo. There are 578 bird species that can be found in the Philippines.

The Rice Terraces of the Philippines Cordilleras was built more than 2,000 years ago. These were created by the Ifugao farmers. It is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage List for 1995. The terraces were created by following the contours of the mountain and then were planted with rice.

The world’s rarest and most expensive shell in the world are also found in the Philippines. It is the Glory of the Sea. The largest shell, Tridacna gigas and the smallest shell in the world are also found in t he Philippines.

The rarest and most expensive shell in the world called Glory of the Sea is also found in the Philippnes. Including the worlds largest shell called Tridacna gigas which is about 1 meter long and weights about 600 pounds. The smallest shell called Pisidum is also found in the Philippines waters.
