If you are wearing ear fitting hearing aids you must wipe it carefully with a tissue or a soft dry cloth before you are ready to go to bed. It is also important to give some time and check that section of the hearing aid which is fitted inside the ear canal as there is a fair chance of some accumulation of ear wax in this part. If it has then you need to get rid of the wax. At the time you buy hearing aids you will also get some cleaning tools which are best for cleaning and it is in the shape of a brush or a wire pick. In case you don’t have it you can also clean with a toothbrush. Keep in mind that the ear fitting hearing aid has to be stored as well as cleaned very gently.

If you are using hearing aids which are fitted behind the ear you also need to follow the same procedure. One the other hand the key difference is that the that the hearing aid  mould which is fitted  inside the ear is typically designed with silicon or Lucite, which does not have any electrical fittings and can easily be cleaned with mild soap and water. You must be very careful before washing that the earpiece is not connected to the behind the ear piece so that the electrical section of the hearing aid is not damaged due to getting wet. You must also dry the ear piece well with a soft dry cloth before you use it and also make sure that the tube does not have any water. You have to keep in mind that you may have to replace the tube after some time which may be 3 to 6 months typically as it loses its flexibility.

Some things you must never do

  • Rinse your hearing aid with alcohol or any other solvent as this can result in the breaking or cracking of the materials with which it is made. It is good to buy the special cleaning liquids available for cleaning hearing aids.

  • The electrical part of the hearing aid should never be allowed to get wet. You must not wear the hearing aid when taking a shower or bathing.

  • As far as possible you must be careful not to drop the hearing aid, particularly on hard ground as this can result in the breakage of the hearing aid.
