Watch Your Step, High Heels Can Take a Toll on Your Health

A WOMAN’S craving for a new pair of stylish high heeled, designer sandals can never come to an end. Not only a pair of beautiful matching sandals add to your glamour and style quotient, but boosts confidence in girls who are shorter in height. But apart from giving you a great looks, wearing high-heels too often can pose great troubles too.

High-heels can give you a lot of health problems. The most common problem, which girls face by wearing high heels is of pain in the fore-foot especially the joints where fingers are connected and the centre of the foot. If you are facing such a problem every time you wear you favorite pair of heels, this might just be a beginning and you need to be alarmed now.

Whenever we wear heels our posture isn’t normal. The hips and the spine goes out of the normal body alignment which changes the body posture and body balance and more of the pressure is exerted on the lower body and mainly our feet have to bear it all. The pressure is on the forefoot, lower-back , knees, thighs and the pivotal joint too is affected. The increased pressure may lead to pain or foot deformities such as hammer toes, bunions, bunionettes and neuromas.

The downward foot position also causes the foot to be more turned to the outside and affects the feet’s function of balancing body’s weight. This change in foot position changes the line of pull of the Achilles tendon and may cause a condition called Haglund’s deformity commonly called pump bump. Stiffening of the calf muscles is another complain. In order to maintain a balance while walking one has to walk carefully concentrating and watching the step. Therefore our feet have to bear a lot of pressure from the body.

There are several health problems that girls can face with regular use of high –heels. As a lot of pressure is on the knees, there is a chance of osteoarthritis which becomes a more serious problems with ageing. High heels have a bad effect on calf ligaments and tendons therefore it stiffens and pains a lot. As the our feet are put to a more vigorous use while walking in heels, the joints and tendons in the hips and thighs are overused. This results in long-term prevailing body pain.

Another thing is about comfort. These days there are a variety of tempting high-heels are available but they do not promise comfort. Most of the high heels that we buy give girls blisters in fingers or in case of sandals that are narrow from the front and closed, the pressure gets on the nail tips which gives a sharp pain in fingers. Blisters leave ugly marks on fingers.

Moreover there is always a risk of falling if you wear high –heeled sandals. One’s ankle might get twisted and it becomes problematic. Also in some extreme cases of twisted ankles, surgery can be required. Celebrities like Victoria Beckham who is famous for her stylish high-heels are facing serious problems because of high heels. She had bunions in her feet which she reportedly got removed by a surgery.

The best way to save your feet and your health is to avoid wearing high heeled sandals. Even if you badly wish to wear heels badly, don’t go for a pair which has more than one and a half inched heels.
