Bananas are sweet and delicious fruits which are cultivated in the tropical regions all over the world.  Human beings have been consuming bananas from thousands of years.  Even today they are among the most widely consumed foods in the world.  In fact, after rice, wheat and corn, bananas are the fourth most widely consumed food by human beings.  These fleshy fruits are grown in more than a hundred countries.  Some experts are of the opinion that bananas were first grown in Malaysia.  India produces the largest quantity of bananas today.  

Health benefits of bananas:

Bananas contain essential nutrients.  These wonderful fruits in their yellow jackets offer immense health benefits.  Bananas are rich in potassium.  Health benefits of potassium are well known.  Potassium prevents stroke, prevents blood pressure, improves muscular strength and metabolism.  It prevents heart and kidney disorders.  It provides relief from anxiety and stress.  Potassium and other B vitamins in bananas promote a healthy nervous system.    

Research has proved that regular consumption of bananas reduces the risk of colorectal cancer.  They promote health bowel movement.  Many people vouch for this fact.  Bananas prevent breast cancer in women.  Bananas reduce the risk of renal cell carcinoma (cancer of the kidneys).  They are known to be good for kidney stones.  

Bananas are rich in fructooligosccharide.  This compound nourishes essential bacteria in the colon.  These bacteria produce enzymes that help in digestion.  They prevent infections.  They aid in absorption of calcium by the human body, there by promoting healthy bones.  Healthy bones are very important for general well being.  

Bananas are rich in pectin, a soluble fiber.  It is known to promote a healthy digestive system.  Bananas contain tryptophan (an essential amino acid) which helps in preventing depression.  Iron in banana carries life giving oxygen to human blood cells.  

As per research studies published in the Archives of Ophthalmology regular consumption of bananas reduce the risk of age related macular degeneration (ARMD).  Bananas are natural antacids.  They provide relief from heartburn.  They prevent morning sickness.  Bananas contain protease inhibitors which eliminate ulcer causing bacteria.    

People allergic to latex may also be allergic to bananas.  But this wonderful fruit should definitely be part of daily diet.
