It serves many purposes beginning with helping out in the kitchen to being an indispensable part of any camping expedition. There are many kinds of knives which can fit into your pocket. Some of them are folding ones and some have serrated blades. Some of them are also designed to serve as antique pieces with beautiful stones blended into the body. However, it is a fact that you will have to clean the tools from time to time so that no bacteria get on them. You should also maintain the sharpness of the knives. Therefore, you need to treat them with special care, depending on the type of tool involved.
Put In Boiling Water
First of all, you need to ensure that the entire surface of the pocket knife is exposed. If the knife is a folding one, you have to open it up so that the handle and blade can be seen in their entirety. Then place some water in a pot and heat it. When it starts to boil, you can put the tool in but take it out after just one minute. But this is advisable only if the knife has no plastic handle. In that case, you can soak it in a dilute acid solution like vinegar or lemon juice. This will be enough to get rid of both the dirt and the germs.
Remove and Dry It
In case of the pocket knife in boiling water, you can turn off the stove and drain the water away from the container. Instead pour in some warm water now. Cold water is not advisable as it will lead to a sudden change in temperature which might help the oily residue to be pasted back to the knife. Remember that the knife is still quite hot now. So you must remove it with a pair of tongs. After getting it out of the pot, put it in a clean place to dry. Don’t try to use the knife instantly but allow it to cool down and the material of the knife to come back to normalcy.
Apply Cooking Oil
You have to be very careful when handling the pocket knife as it the blades are all out now and you might get hurt if you are not careful. If there are still any remnants of dirt left on the knife then get it cleaned with an old toothbrush. Gently scrape the remaining dirt on the tool that the boiling water was not able to get rid of. Once the knife is dry and completely clean, you can apply some cooking oil on it. This will bring back the gloss. Then you can wipe off the excess oil with a paper towel.
There are many things you can keep in mind while using a pocket knife. Always make sure that you wipe the blade clean after every use. Make sure that you wash it clean if you use it for cutting meat while hunting. Usually, the dishwasher cannot be used to wash the knives. But it is very important that you handle it carefully.
