Ponzo is an Italian trattoria/pizzeria which has a “Italian food to go” motto so it is quite speedy in its delivery and is located in the midtown area of the city, which opened in 2009, but the family business started far back in the mid 1950’s in California. The place, which is not too big and cozy is located at 2515 Bagby and its hours of operations are from Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and it remains closed on Monday.
The food that they offer is very homey and created from scratch like some of their pasta dishes such as the penne pasta with a marinara sauce for $7.95, or the homemade manicotti, which are pasta shell stuffed with ricotta cheese, Italian sausage and mozzarella topped with a red meat sauce for $8.95.
Or try one of their hot subs like the Italian roast beef which comes dipped in au jus and sautéed bell peppers for $7.95, or even the mouthwatering meatball which comes topped with meat sauce and cheese and meatballs made from scratch for $6.95. If you prefer a cold sandwich then go with the Ponzo original sub which includes hard salami, cotto salami, mortadella and Provolone cheese for $7.95, or the ham and cheese for $6.95, or try and share the Godfather which has ham, hard and cotto salami, mortadella, Italian roast beef, honey roasted turkey, Provolone and Swiss cheese a 15 inch sandwich for $19.95.
It seems that their pizzas are what made them popular and you can taste the fresh ingredients such as the tomato sauce; you can order the beachcomber which has mozzarella, ham, Canadian bacon and pineapple for $15.95 for 14 inch, or go with the Ponzo Deluxe which has mozzarella, pepperoni, Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, black olives, mushrooms, onions and bell peppers for $12.95 a 12 inch one.
And for dessert, they have some choices like the homemade cheesecake for $4.75, or the chocolate eruption for $5.95 and you can add a raspberry, chocolate, caramel or strawberry topping for an extra dollar or even the small cannoli for $2.50.
The service is fast and friendly, so it gets a solid B, while the prices are quite good and they get an A-, and the food is rather good especially the pizzas so it gets a B+.
