Instillation of Eye drops

This is the process of treating eye infection for local effects.

How to do the process of eye drop instillation

  1. Let the patient sit, lie or inclined with his/her head tilted toward the side of the affected eye.

  2. Then, wipe off any secretions on the lids of the eye with the sterile dry cotton.

  3. Next, you should expose the lower conjunctival sac to give way for the treatment.

  4. Then, instill or apply the prescribed medication either it is a solution or ointment.If it is a solution, tie prescribed number of drops are allowed to fall into the center of the exposed sac.If it is an ointment, put a small amount in equal distribution along the lower conjunctival sac after averting the lower lid but without letting go of the lower lid.Lift the upper lid and let the patient look down then make the eyes closed.

  5. Lastly, wipe off the excess medicine gently using the dry sterile cotton.

Taking care of the equipment used in the eye drop instillation

  1. You take the tray into the medication room

  2. The soiled articles must be discarded

  3. You wash the other equipment used to make them ready for the next process.

  4. You should take note of the patient’s reaction with the use of the articles.

Irrigation of the eye

Irrigation of the eye is done in order to cleanse the lower conjunctival sac of the eye.

Equipment used in irrigating the eye

  1. One Tray (Small)

  2. Sterile bowl or glass

  3. Prescribed medication for the eyes

  4. Emesis basin

  5. Sterile eye dropper

  6. Sterile Dry Cotton Balls

How to do the process of eye irrigation

  1. Have the patient in sitting or lying position whichever is more comfortable with the tilted toward the side of the affected eye.This position will allow the solution from the inner canthus flow toward the outer canthus.

  2. You should cleanse the lids and the lashes of the eyes with the use of the sterile cotton balls wet with the prescribed solution.

  3. Then, place the emesis basin against the check to receive the irrigating solution.

  4. Expose the lower conjunctival sac for the process of irrigating the eye.

  5. Direct the flow of the irrigating solution from the inner to the other canthus along the conjunctival sac irrigate.The solution directed toward the outer canthus side in preventing the spread of contamination from the eye to the lacrimal sac, the lacrimal duct and the nose.The eye is always injured easily.

  6. Avoid touching any part of the eye with the irrigating tip.The movement of the eye helps to move secretion from the upper conjunctival sac to the lower part.

  7. Let the patient close his/her eyes periodically during the procedure.

  8. Continue irrigating the lower conjunctival sac until return flow of solution is already clear.Irrigation of the lower conjunctival is more comfortable for the patient.

  9. Have the patient close his/her eyelids then wipe off excess fluid smoothly and gently from inner to outer canthus.Put all discarded cotton in emesis basin.

Taking care of the equipment used in the eye irrigation

  1. Collect the articles and take the tray into the medication room

  2. Discard all the discarded articles.

  3. The soiled articles must be discarded

  4. Wash and clean up all the equipment used in the procedure to get next for the usage.
