I think the biggest problem we face when taking action, is our internal dialogue. We tend to talk ourselves out of doing things even if we know the task has to be completed no matter what. Procrastination stems from our lack of motivation which in turn stems from our unwillingness to discipline our mind.
I suppose there are two ways to tackle this problem. The first..is to just cut off any thought that leads to procrastination and to just do it without thinking. The second…is to come up with different techniques which hopefully will kick-start your mind into wanting to get each task done with little or no fuss.
Of course, like anything else this is clearly easier said than done. However, I would like to share with you 15 techniques that can be used at different times for different situations to help motivate you into getting up off your ass and get bloody well moving.
A lot of these you have heard before, but as I always say, beware of intellectual knowledge. Just because you can spout a fact from your mouth does not mean you actually have a clue what the experience is like unless you try it out for yourself.
1…Create a vision of what you want to achieve and live into it by visualizing the outcome on a daily basis. Most, if not all successful people visualize their goals then set out to achieve them. when you can see the final outcome in your minds eye, it will motivate you to go out and realize your desires.
2…Make quick decisions. Next time you are faced with a situation which requires you to make a choice, quickly decide and go from there. Most often our initial gut feeling is right. When we dwell on any certain topic or choice, we may well end up talking ourselves out of doing neither.
3…Just do it. how often do we have a zombie like reaction to the most mundane tasks. I used to mope around trying to get motivated to go to the shops, or into the city centre, even if I had no choice in the matter. Now, I don’t even give it a second thought, I just get on with it. JUST BLOODY WELL DO IT!!
4…Baby steps. Next task you have to complete that has you zombieing around (it’s a real word)…break it up into smaller more enticing tasks and start moving.
5…Write it down. I don’t know if you have ever wrote out your goals the night before, (how would I, I don’t sit outside your window at night) but it is an excellent way to motivate yourself into getting things done. Seriously…try it!
6…Change your environment. If you find that your life has become stagnant and you just can’t get motivated, change something, whether it’s to hang out with new people or to just cut out the TV and local news, you may just need a different set of stimuli to motivate your passion. Do something different today and see how you feel.
7…Sing and dance. Yes you may feel like a right tool, but it works. When you sing out loud or dance around your living room, you will undoubtedly spike your energy levels. This in turn will give you self motivation.
8…Contemplate your death. Imagining yourself on your death-bed should give you a clearer perspective of your life. Hopefully this will motivate you to get things done while you still have some years left in you:)
9…Read positive material. Flooding your mind with positive information will keep you motivated. Listening to creative and uplifting stories puts a smile on your face and you actually end up wanting to get things done.
10…Start your day with an attitude of gratitude. Showing how grateful you are for the abundance in your life will give you a sense of peace and acceptance. When you feel grateful, you feel energized and believe it or not, you respect yourself a lot more. It’s hard not to get motivated when you accept and respect yourself.
11…Stop the internal dialogue. Our self talk is more negative than positive by default. We are born into a society of worrier’s, complainers and we are constantly bombarded by the media with the most disgusting and self defeatist headlines. No wonder it’s hard to get motivated listening to all this crap day in and day out. Pick one day this week to monitor your self-talk and you will see what I’m talking about. Weed out the negative thoughts by replacing with positive ones.
12…Do something for someone without looking for anything in return. Why not make this a daily habit, it doesn’t have to be a major life changing gesture, but if you repeat the procedure regularly, it may turn out to be just that…FOR YOU!
13…Write out 10 – 15 of your greatest qualities and review them every night before sleep and every morning before you rise. At first you may think that it will be hard to come up with that amount, but once you get going you will notice just how many qualities you actually take for granted.
14…Face your fears. I know this is a big one, but let’s be honest, it’s the sure-fire way to getting your heart racing and will definitely lead to growth. Remember, we all have fears and you’re a long time dead.
Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold. Helen Keller.
15…It is your responsibility to create your life the way you want it. if all else fails when trying to motivate yourself, always remind yourself, it becomes a habit the more you repeatedly do something. Don’t let lack of motivation be your claim to complain.
