Plastic surgery is concerned with the correction of form and function. Though cosmetic surgery is best known as plastic surgery, but most plastic surgery is not cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgery includes different types of microsurgery, hand surgery, reconstructive surgery and treatment of burns. Cosmetic surgery enhance or change a certain part to make it look the way we want to have, reconstructive surgery is performed to restore the damaged body part due to the occurrence of certain events like bone fracture, cleft palate, mastectomy and even burns.
.Reconstructive surgery techniques were practiced in India since 800 BC. In 6th century BC, Sushruta, the father of Indian surgery, made important contributions in the field of plastic and cataract surgery. This medical work which was originally in Sanskrit was translated into Arabic language in 750 AD. And this Arabic translation made their way into Europe via intermediaries. Instruments used in the Sushruta Samhita were modified in the western world.
Romans and Egyptians performed plastic cosmetic surgery by using simple techniques such as repairing damaged ears. They did not dissect either human beings or animals for religious reasons.
This surgery became common in 19th and 20th century. The technique of anesthesia was established which reduced infection from surgery by the introduction of sterile techniques and disinfectants. The invention of antibiotics and penicillin was another step in making elective surgery possible.
In the year 1827, Dr. John Peter Mettauer, the first American plastic surgeon performed the first cleft palate operation with instruments he himself designed.
New Zealand otolaryngologist working in London Harold Gillies, developed many of the techniques of modern plastic surgery in caring for soldiers of World War I, suffering from disfiguring facial injuries. His cousin Archibald McIndoe, expanded his work during world war II, by treating RAF aircrew suffering from severe burns. The first female to male sex reassignment surgery was carried out in the year 1946 by Gillies.
There are several benefits of plastic surgery for the patient who has undergone the procedure. This surgery often results in increase in self esteem and confidence. As plastic surgery is made to achieve a certain look that we desire, we become more comfortable with ourselves and become more confident in our interaction with others. It helps to improve our interaction skill and brings about a positive factor in our socialization process. It helps a person to function better and more comfortably. Improvement in appearances also increase chance of getting a good job and become successful with career.
But there is also risk involved in plastic surgery; people may react differently to the treatment and procedures. Sometimes, they can suffer side effects. So before taking this step, it is necessary to consult doctors and discuss in detail about the pros and cons of the procedure to set proper expectations and avoid undesirable side effects.  It is necessary to coordinate with the doctor and plan carefully which procedure to take for the sake of compatibility. It is also very important to know the negative reactions and allergies the body might face after the treatment. This would help to minimize the risks and maximize the benefits of the procedure done.
Another drawback of having plastic surgery is the high cost of the procedure. But however, the benefit this procedure brings is much more than the cost that one has to pay.
