Dengue Fever is one of the major tropical diseases affecting the human race. Endemic in southeast asia and some parts of tropical africa, this disease causes much widespread fear and morbidity. Public awareness, I think is the key for early recognition and diagnosis and hence early medical intervention. DENGUE FEVER SYMPTOMS, are non-specific and can be seen in a wide variety of illnesses.
The public must be aware on how the disease is contracted and spread. Dengue Fever is one of several viral diseases that is spread thru a living vector, namely the notorious aedes aegypti mosquito. This insect as with the disease it carries is endemic to the areas previously mentioned. It is only the female mosquito that spreads the virus once it feeds on an unsuspecting human host. The mosquito itself is free from the virus during birth but acquires the infection once the female mosquito chances upon an infected human being.
It is with this knowledge, that in order to quarantine or control any outbreaks, mosquito population eradication programs be instituted and infected humans properly treated and isolated.
DENGUE FEVER can manifest with hemorraghic signs labelling the disease, DENGUE HEMORRHAGIC FEVER. Both have similar clinical syndromes, but bleeding and other signs like hemoconcentration and thrombocytopenia are specific for DENGUE HEMORRHAGIC FEVER.
Although mortality is low, it can lead to increased morbidity if not properly treated. Treatment is mostly supportive, adequate hydration and nutrition support are top on the list. Blood product transfusions are warranted in cases of bleeding leading to hemodynamic instability.
