Whats the difference?

Many people become confused Between the terms Meteor, Meteorites and Meteoroids. The different names actually reflect on how the object Is seen. Meteoroids are fragments of Asteroids or Comets, often no larger than a grain of sand, which roam around our Solar System. When these enter out Atmosphere they burn up and leave bright streaks through the night sky. When this happens they are called Shooting Stars or Meteors.

If the Meteor Is not completely destroyed by our Atmosphere, It will hit the ground. In this case we call It a Meteorite. If the Impact speed Is slow the Meteorite will survive. If the object Is very large It will Impact so quickly that It will form a Crater, Usually evaporating both the ground and Itself. One of the best examples of this evaporation effect can be found In Flagstaff, Arizona. The Crater Is called Barringer Crater, see picture below.
