What Is an Asteroid?

Our nearest Asteroids can be found between the planets Mars and Jupiter. This region of space Is known as the Asteroid Belt. These Asteroids range from the size of a small pebble or boulder to the size of a whole country.

The Asteroid belt are the remains from the accretion process that built the planets In our solar system over 4600 million years ago. These Asteroids were unable to gather to form a single planet because of nearby Jupiter. Jupiter’s gravity constantly tugs at them keeping them from sticking together.

Many people imagine the Asteroid Belt to be a very compact and busy place. Movies have help to create this Illusion by exaggerating It and giving people misguided Images In their minds. In reality the Asteroid Belt Is very sparse. If you were stood on one Asteroid trying to see another, you would probably be waiting your entire lifetime. This Is due to the Asteroids slow rotation process and the fact that there’s a hell of a lot of space out there.
