The surface of the thermal paper is impregnated with a solid-state chemical mixture of a dye and a suitable matrix; a combination of a chemical fluoran leuco dye, octadecylphosphonic acids as an example. When the matrix and mixture is heated above its melting point, the dye solution reacts with the acid, shifts to its colored form, and the changed form is then made and conserved in met stable state when the matrix solidifies back quickly enough.

Typically the coating will turn black when heated with any heated machine. But coatings that turn red or blue are sometimes used. While an open heat object or source such as a flame can discolor the paper, a fingernail swiped fast and quickly across the paper will also give enough heat from friction to produce a mark on such paper.
