Contact lenses have been the best alternative for many people who do not like to wear glasses. There are about millions of people in the United States alone who wear contact lenses. Some residents of other countries who wear contact lenses are also millions of numbers. Thus, there is a big production of contact lenses worldwide as many people rely on using them.
Contact Lenses Distribution
Many designer contact lenses are produced every single day. There are different types of lenses available too. They actually vary in colors and sizes. Consumers differ in terms of the size of eyes and color preference so producers try to give variations to this kind of item.
Distribution of contact lenses is common to all parts of the world. Anywhere you go has producers of these lenses. Therefore, it is not difficult to buy lenses since they are available on local stores and online.
Types of Contact Lenses
There are basically two major types of contact lenses. These types are named as soft lenses and rigid gas permeable lenses.
Soft lenses are the most popular one because of the flexibility they bring to users. Under this type, there are also variations which are the daily disposable lenses, extended wear lenses and colored lenses.
Except colored lenses, daily disposable lenses and extended wear disposables are made from soft polymer-plastic material that goes with water and UV protection. These can make oxygen pass through the lens that gives comfort to the user. However, it is also possible that pollutants can be absorbed.
1. Disposable Lenses
Disposable lenses are only used for one day and must be thrown right away after the end of the day usually before sleeping.
2. Extended Lenses
Extended wear lenses are used for certain period without removing them. This type of contact lens is used for several weeks or months depending on the way it is designed for.
3. Colored Lenses
Most lenses these days come in different colors. You can choose any color you like depending on the purpose of using a pair of lenses. These are called colored contact lenses.
Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses
Rigid gas permeable lenses have two subtypes which are called bifocal and toric lenses. This kind of contact lens is made of silicone polymers that also allow oxygen to pass through which circulate to the cornea.
1. Bifocal Lenses
This is especially designed type of lenses for people who have presbyopia, a condition wherein the focus of the eye is diminished. This is the contact lens for individuals that have a hard time seeing things or those who often see blurry things.
2. Toric Lenses
This is also a type of lens for people who have vision problems, whether nearsighted or farsighted.
Your selection of contact lenses depends on what condition your eyes have. If you have major vision problems, you will likely need to get rigid gas permeable lenses. If you need eye protection, you may choose soft lenses instead. The basis of your choice solely lies on the purpose of using it. The term used to describe the strength of contact lenses, back when I got mine in Denmark, was Dags kontaktinser styrke. For more info about determining lens strength , check this article out.
