Cricket World Cup 2011 Opening Ceremony took place two days before the first match on 17th February 2011 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur in Dhaka.
The first match is being played in Dhaka today as India competes again Bangladesh. As far as the final is concerned, it will be held in Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Previously only 12 countries used to participate in the tournament but in 2011 the format was changed to 14 participants. The game will be held in Round Robin format for at least two groups and each group constituting of seven teams.
All the 7 teams in one group will compete with each other and try to earn the maximum points. The top four maximum points earning team will move on to quarter final for knockout session. Each team will play at least six matches even if they have failed to secure qualifying points for quarter final.
The teams playing in the tournament is divided in the following two groups. Let us have a clear look on them.
- New Zealand
- Sri Lanka
- South Africa
- West Indies
Previously four nations was to host the tournament, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, but due to imbalance in social elements in Pakistan due to terrorist attacks, Pakistan was deprived out from hosting the World Cup. Pakistan was to hold 14 matches which were later distributed to India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. India will host 29 matches all over India and will be played in eight venues. The final and one semi-final will be played in India itself.
Sri Lanka will host almost twelve matches across three venues and one of the matches will be Semi-Final. Bangladesh will host the Opening Ceremony and the first match and some of the eight normal matches across two venues. The tickets for the matches started to sell out from 1st June 2010 and are almost completely sold out till now, so hope of getting one is very tough.
