Dazed and Confused takes place during the 1970’s in Austin, Texas. It gives a glimpse into life during that era and shows what a fun and entertaining time it was. It shows what teenagers thought about during that time and provides a glimpse into how they entertained themselves and shows a bit what the culture was like during the Seventies. It seems like an ideal time to grow up after watching the movie. For example, there is a cool hang-out spot that all of the older kids meet at and play pool. It’s a good place to hang out with members of the opposite sex and find out where the parties are.
Dazed and Confused presents rampant drug use which was probably accurate during that time. Marijuana is really the only drug that the teens use, but it seems like most of the kids use it. It seemed more prevalent during that epoch than it is today.
You can see how cheap the prices are during the movie. It kind of reminds us how much inflation we have had. But then, they probably only earned a couple bucks an hour. Gas was especially cheap.
One of the best scenes is when some of the incoming seniors go mailbox smashing. They speed by in a seventies-mobile, picking up trash cans and tossing them into mailboxes. Then an incoming freshman, one of the main characters with long hair, picks up a bowling ball and throughs it through the back window of a parked car. If you watch the movie, this plants the schoolkids in quite a bit of trouble a bit later on.
Overall, Dazed and Confused is a very funny and entertaining movie. I highly recommend it. One of the funniest lines is when a blond graduate that works for the city says about the younger girls, “I keep getting older and they stay the same age.”
The final scene is a big outdoors beer bash. It goes on all night and you can see how the teenagers interact and how much fun it would be to go to such a party in the Seventies. At the end of the night, the kegs are tapped out, everyone says their goodbyes and smoke their final joints. Seems like it would be a good way to end the night.
