In order to have a successful career it helps to be in an industry that offers career progression, but more importantly, there are many personal traits that mark whether or not you are packaged for career success.

1. Ambition

Are you an ambitious person? Ambition means a different thing for different people but, broadly speaking, you can deem yourself ambitious if you have career aspirations for the future. The thing that really sets apart the ambitious from the content, is the feeling that nothing is out of your reach – aim high, and sky’s the limit. Having real ambition is also about accepting that you have to start from the bottom and work upwards whilst always keeping your sights on your goals. You should know where you want to go and how you are going to get there.

2. Proactive

It is all very well to have ambition but it will not amount to much career success if you do not do anything to make it happen. Those who are destined or have achieved successful careers, are people who decide on the goals and take the steps to achieve them. Career success is not achieved by dreaming, it can only be achieved from doing.

3. Drive and Determination

Having a successful career is hard work and can often prove testing so it requires someone who has a lot of drive and determination. You cannot be intimidated by challenges and instead of them being a negative thing, they should be the very things that spur you on. Determination is crucial to career success as it doesn’t happen overnight, so you need to be able to let your determination pull you through the journey. Being driven means that you will not only be focused, but you will also be proactive in making sure that you take the steps, whether it is further training or going for different job roles.

4. Forward thinker

To be successful in your career, you always have to know what your next move is going to be. Without this mindset, it is too easy to get stuck in a career rut and never really achieve what you set out to do. It ties in with ambition because every move you make should take you one step closer to your goal.

5. Financial Return

If money is your driving force, you are unlikely to have career success. Building a successful career is about the long term, for which you will get financial rewards but, they will build up gradually. For career success, your focus should be more goal seeking than money making.
