What’s The Fastest Animal In The World?

When my son posed the question “what’s the fastest animal in the world dad” my initial thought was the cheetah. I’m pretty sure that’s what I was told when I was a boy. And that is certainly true of land animals, with this beast clocking speeds of up to 70 mph (113 kph).  The second fastest land animal is widely believed to be the pronghorn antelope at over 60 mph. But neither come close the world’s fastest animal.

So what about the sea creatures? Well, with regards to the fastest animal in the oceans, that award goes to the sailfish which reaches speeds equivalent to that of the cheetah. The sailfish is followed by the mako shark at around 60 mph (97 kph). But all of these are beaten by the fastest flying animal.

The swift can fly at speeds of 106 mph (a whopping 171 kph). However, even this is surpassed when the peregrine falcon dives, reaching in excess of 200 mph (322 kph)!

So there we go. The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal, at least when it is diving.
