Pieces of My Heart
Poetry is a good substitute for religion and philosophy. “The strongest part of religion is its unconscious poetry. Without poetry our science will appear incomplete; and most of what now passes with us for religion and philosophy will be replaced by poetry” (Matthew Arnold).
He that rejecteth Poetry and Art will not have a good conscience. Poetry alone cleanses and saves our soul. Poetry is divine. Poetry alone can expose ‘hypocrisies of official society’, and the totalitarianism of the present machine society. The most important thing for us is to possess some inward Platonic truth to face the dark unspirituality and ‘homelessness’ of the postmodern ethos.
The most important thing for a creative artist is to posses some inward Platonic reality to face the dark unspirituality and ‘homelessness’ of the postmodern ethos. The most obvious and inescapable aspect of the poems, artwork and short stories included in this issue is to convey the idea that there are as diverse ways of creative expression as there are individualities.
I notice the great divide between the poet and the oppressive, commercial powers with no interest in encouraging poetry What a pity that fascist and terrorist powers and values are rising in such monstrous and terrifying times! The ethical poverty caused by a deplorable loss of human values, the unfortunate triumph of consumerism and materialism, worship of money and machine- all these make us unhappy, yet I hope the bright and luminous poets will one day find an answer to the vices of contemporary reality. What a pity that fascist and terrorist powers and values are rising in such monstrous and terrifying times!
Throughout this task of publication I notice the great divide between the poet and the oppressive, commercial powers with no interest in encouraging poetry . The following wise words of St. Francis of Assisi inspire me:
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love,
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it is in dying that we are born
To eternal life.
No doubt, it is the duty of the creative artists to advocate culture, tolerance, peace and moral values against hypocrisy and selfishness. Only the creative writers can reveal “the wisdom of the heart”. The world deserves better than devastation caused by the Iraq war. I pray for Peace, reconstruction and humanitarian assistance
